Who were the Marquette "Prison Pirates"?
The Prison Pirates were the inmate hockey team from Michigan's Marquette Branch Prison, formed as part of a unique and successful prison sports program led by athletic director Leonard Brumm. With donated equipment from local teams and surprising on-ice skill, the Pirates held a 4–1–1 record against outside opponents. Their most famous moment came in 1954, when they hosted the Detroit Red Wings for an outdoor exhibition—the first outdoor game ever played by an NHL team. Though the final score was never officially tracked beyond the first period, the story lives on as one of the most unusual and legendary games in hockey history.
